Giants put WR Tyree on PUP list (AP)
Wide receiver David Tyree was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform reserve list by the New York Giants on Tuesday, meaning the player who made a game-saving catch in the Super Bowl won’t be making any for at least the first six weeks of the season. Tyree, whose spectacular one-handed catch against his helmet sparked the Giants’ late game-winning drive against the previously unbeaten New…

A few days after being released by the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad could be headed back to a familiar place. The Carolina Panthers have reportedly shown a significant interest in the veteran receiver, who spent the first nine years of his careers with them. Since leaving Carolina, his numbers have gone down significantly.

During the 2004 season, his final year with the Panthers, Muhammad had 93 catches for 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns. Over the past three seasons in Chicago, he has totaled 164 catches for 2,183 yards and 12 touchdowns. Part of that had to due with ineffective quarterback play in Chicago, and part of it had to do with not having many talented receivers around him.

Although it’s doubtful he would be back in his prime with the Panthers, re-uniting with receiver Steve Smith and quarterback Jake Delhomme could be the ingredient for success. Since Muhammad left Carolina, the Panthers have failed to find a complement to Smith in Keary Colbert, Keyshawn Johnson, and Drew Carter.

Still, returning to Carolina is not an inevitable for Muhammad, as he has been in contact with other teams as well.

Manning activated, can finally practice (AP)
More than a month after having knee surgery and enduring weeks of rampant speculation about whether the injury was worse than first feared, two-time league MVP Peyton Manning finally provided his doubters with one emphatic answer Tuesday: He’s back, right on schedule. “This is a significant step for me to get back out on the practice field,” Manning said before throwing and running with teammates.

Five ways each team can win the Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLII

And so the big game is finally here. After weeks of teams battling hard to get to the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots and the New York Giants are the two who’ve reached the grandest stage the sport has to offer. I expect Chris will posting a Super Bowl analysis of sufficient depth to dwarf anything I’d put together so I’ve decided to write down how I feel each team can go about win these games (aside from “Scoring more than the other team“, obviously.) Aside from that, I’m just hoping for a good game after being a little let down by previous Super Bowls. (more…)

Goodell, Rooneys meet about Steelers (AP)
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t issue any ultimatums after meeting with the five Rooney brothers about the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He did emphasize that three-quarters of league owners must approve any potential sale, and team chairman Dan Rooney happens to be very popular among other owners.

Mourning Vincent mum on NFLPA plans (AP)
Troy Vincent declined to discuss whether he’s interested in succeeding Gene Upshaw in leading the NFL Players’ Association because he is still mourning the union’s executive director’s death — and a person Vincent referred to as “a mentor.” “I will not discuss anything outside of my mourning and sympathy for (the Upshaw) family,” Vincent wrote in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press on…

Mangini likely to sit Favre vs. Eagles (AP)
Grab a cap and a clipboard, Brett. It appears you’ll be sitting this one out. Jets coach Eric Mangini said Tuesday that he’s leaning toward not playing quarterback Brett Favre in the team’s preseason finale at Philadelphia. “If I had to tilt one way or the other like an airplane, I’d tilt that way,” Mangini said.
